Hi, my name is Melissa (she/her), and I am so glad you’re here. I believe that we all have the potential to live abundant and meaningful lives but that obstacles such as trauma, loss, cycles of addiction, and larger systems of oppression can often impede our paths. My approach to therapy is to meet you from a place of inclusion, cultural humility and empathy. This means I will respect any personal values, cultural backgrounds and/or spiritual beliefs that you may bring into
session.

Using an integrative approach that includes psychotherapy, art therapy, and mindfulness techniques, my goal is to support you in discovering your innate strength and resources so that you feel empowered to embody new skills and practices in your everyday life. While our therapeutic relationship and establishing a felt sense of collaboration are of primary importance in our work together, I use a combination of somatic experiencing, internal family systems, art therapy and EMDR to help support your unique process.

If you’re interested and if appropriate, we may engage in art making in session. Art therapy is about using image and color in the moment to convey your emotions and ideas, to release tension, and to gain insight into your inner world. You do not need to be an "artist" or have any art experience whatsoever to benefit from using art therapy. It is a resource that we can, or don't have to, use, depending on what feels right for you.

As I will be encouraging you to bring all of yourself into our sessions, my humanness will also be present. My social identity includes being a white, cis-gendered, temporarily able-bodied, middle-class queer female. When not in session, you might find me reading in any patch of sunlight Portland has to offer,
making my own artwork and teaching non-therapeutic art workshops at local businesses.  I consider myself a life-long learner and am very interested in staying informed both as a professional counselor and as an art therapist.

I am a licensed Professional Counselor Associate and a Registered Provisional Art Therapist in the state of Oregon. I have a dual master's degree in art therapy and counseling from Southwestern College and New Earth Institute and have specialty training in EMDR, Internal Family Systems, addictions and other trauma-informed protocols. My professional experience includes working with adults in mental health settings, including in addiction facilities, and facilitating therapeutic art groups and groups for individuals with dissociative identity disorder.

I’m really looking forward to working with you!
